Healing Horses

Therapeutic Riding Centre

"Horses helping humans to heal"

Our Aim

Our aim at Healing Horses Therapeutic Riding Centre is to provide therapeutic and recreational horse riding activities for people living with disabilities.
Horse riding is a natural reflex inhibiting position which helps improve balance and posture providing a unique form of exercise and rehabilitation. The movement of the horse works to strengthen muscles throughout a rider's body and promote better overall health.

Riders may also benefit from other aspects of riding such as increased mobility, independence and self-esteem.
It is also an opportunity to overcome fears while socializing and competing with peers.
The ultimate goal is for the riders to learn to ride as independently and as well as possible.

Our Sessions

Mobirise

Our sessions are conducted under the supervision of an accredited RDA coach with the assistance of trained volunteers. We structure our sessions to make use of mounted games and activities designed to encourage participation and the development of individual abilities.

Therapeutic riding begins with gentle exercises performed on horseback. These exercises include such things as leaning forward to pat the horse's neck, leaning backwards to pat the horse's rump and twisting left and right in the saddle. Each rider is assisted by 'side walkers' who make sure that they remain secure in the saddle while performing the exercises.

Mobirise
The rhythmic movement of the horses walk can stimulate nerves and the exercises increase mobility. The warmth and three dimensional movement of the horse is transmitted through the rider's body, gradually making it more relaxed and supple, reducing spasms and improving balance, posture and co-ordination
